External Community

External communities are primarily for customers or prospects of a brand or product. Internal and external communities differ in connotations but are similar in some ways. Both have similar metrics for measuring impact and the common patterns in communities remain somewhat comparable - like the number of lurkers, participants, and super fans.

There’s also a difference in priorities that differentiate internal and external communities. Connections and communication are more valued in internal communities as compared to external that values advocacy and promotion. Whereas, data collection and analysis are more critical for external communities as compared to internal.
